The foundation and acquisition by purchase of outstanding collections of books and MSS enabled Guppy to build up the new John Rylands into a world famous research library exceptionally quickly. He also played a large and important part in reconstructing the library at the University of Louvain destroyed by the Germans in 1914. He was an active member of the LA, edited the new LAR from 1899 until 1903, was made an Honorary Fellow in 1903 and President in 1926. Throughout his life he displayed outstanding practical interest in the education and training of young assistants to whom he lectured in London and, subsequently, in Manchester.
